# Cypress Ambassador Spotlight: Kevin Korenhof

By Jessica Capuano Mora

Welcome back to another Ambassador Spotlight. Every post in this series introduces you to one of the people quietly holding up the Cypress community, including where they started, what they believe about testing, and what they've figured out along the way. Curious about the program itself? Learn more [here](https://www.cypress.io/ambassadors?utm_source=blog&utm_campaign=ambassador-spotlight).

This week we're highlighting Kevin Korenhof, who came to test automation from the classroom and brought the teaching instinct with him into Discord threads, blog series, client projects, and conference talks. We learn about the Cypress feature he loves most and what he does when he's nowhere near a test suite. Read on to find out more.

# What motivates you to be a Cypress Ambassador?

Before I went into testing I worked in education. I have been teaching for several years and have always had a passion for sharing knowledge with other people. Working as a test automation consultant already gives me a bit of that back, but there I'm still just a part of the project. As a Cypress Ambassador I'm now a part of the Cypress community where I can share my knowledge with the whole community. Either by answering direct questions, writing articles or getting on stage at conferences.

# How do you currently help others that are either using Cypress or interested in using Cypress?

I'm always hanging around the Cypress Discord answering questions where I can. Besides that I'm writing a blog series about using Cypress at scale and probably about other interesting topics after that. And of course as a consultant I'm always helping out in the projects where I'm working. Not only just to 'write some tests', but mainly with a focus to make the test automation better and teaching the other developers and testers how to improve their testing.

# What is your favorite Cypress feature?

I'm falling more and more in love with Cypress Studio. It is a very powerful environment when working on tests or when you are debugging. It's really nice to have one overview that shows the test, the app under test and the testing code. It highlights the line of code where an assertion failed and lets you adjust the code right in Cypress Studio and then rerun that specific test. It's an amazing way to quickly run some iterations of your testing code, see what works and then have it saved in your codebase right away, without even leaving the browser window.

# What is your favorite "Cypress Best Practice" and why?

Always make sure to run tests in isolation. All tests should be separate at all times. A test can never rely on the result of a previous test and should never be able to influence the result of another test. By making sure that all tests can run independently and also will not influence each other, you can have actual predictable and reliable results. When tests start to influence each other, one failed test can mean that dozens after it will also fail. But these failures say nothing about those tests. Therefore, always make sure that each test can run in isolation from all the others.

# Outside of work, what are your favorite things to do (hobbies, passions, etc.)?

Outside of work I like to make music. I play the double bass and a bit of bass guitar and piano. I also volunteer as a lifeguard during events or competitions at or near the water. And of course, let's not forget my amazing wife and daughter. Nothing beats having some quality time with them.

# What is one professional milestone you are proud of?

I think that I'm mostly proud of making it as a Cypress Ambassador within just a few years of doing test automation. In a relatively short time I have been able to really understand the framework on such a level that I can now help others with their set-up, rewrite frameworks that have major issues and immediately see how things can be improved within a test automation suite. And to have these skills recognized as an ambassador is really amazing!

# For new users - what is the best way to "get started" with Cypress?

Start small, but also just do it! Don't be afraid of it. It's a lot easier than you might think.

Just install Cypress and start writing a few small scripts. From there on out, expand it bit by bit.

Face the problems you will run into! It's only normal. Don't be afraid of them, embrace them! Start an investigation and find a solution! By facing and solving you are growing your skill set and becoming a true professional!

# What is your favorite quote or saying?

"The biggest bug is between the keyboard and the chair".

I always keep this in the back of my mind. We can make amazing products that are extremely well tested with everything we have. But still we never know what stupid things the end user will do. They will always find a way to break stuff...
